Cosy Season Is Coming

There's a moment every October when it happens. The evenings draw in a little earlier, the first proper chill arrives on the morning school run, and suddenly the idea of a night in with the lamps on and a blanket on the sofa sounds like the best plan in the world.

Cosy season is here, and with a few simple changes your home can be ready to make the most of it. Whether you've just picked up the keys to a new Hagan home or you're settling in for your first winter, here's how to get your home warm, welcoming and ready for the months ahead.

1. Layer up your living spaces

The quickest way to make a room feel cosier is texture. Swap lightweight summer throws for chunky knits, add a sheepskin or wool rug underfoot, and bring out the velvet or bouclé cushions. A layered room feels warmer before you've even touched the thermostat.

Stick to a warm palette for your accessories - think rust, ochre, forest green, deep navy and soft oatmeal. You don't need to redecorate, just a few seasonal swaps make a real difference.

2. Get your lighting right

Overhead lights are rarely cosy. As the nights get longer, build up softer layers of light around the room instead: table lamps, floor lamps, and a few warm-toned bulbs (look for 2700K or lower). Fairy lights in a glass jar or along a shelf add a gentle glow, and candles, real or LED, finish things off.

A good rule of thumb is to have light at three different heights in a room. It instantly makes a space feel more inviting.

3. Make the most of your heating

Before the cold properly sets in, it's worth getting familiar with your heating controls. Set your heating schedule around your routine so the house is warm when you wake up and when you get home, rather than heating an empty home all day.

Check that radiators aren't blocked by sofas or long curtains, as this can stop heat circulating properly. If you're in a new-build home, you'll already be benefiting from modern insulation and energy-efficient systems that help keep the warmth in - so a little fine-tuning of your settings goes a long way.

4. Dress your windows for winter

Curtains do more than look good. Heavier, lined curtains help hold in heat once the sun goes down, so close them at dusk to keep the warmth in. If you've been living with blinds alone, a pair of thermal-lined curtains in a warm tone is one of the easiest cosy-season upgrades you can make.

5. Create a cosy corner

Every home needs one spot made for slowing down. Pick a corner - by a window, in the living room, or even on a landing - and set it up with a comfy chair, a throw, a side table for your cuppa and a lamp for reading. It becomes the place you naturally gravitate towards on a dark evening.

6. Bring the outside in

Autumn has some of the best natural decor going. Gather a few branches, pinecones or dried grasses for a vase, pick up some seasonal stems from your local florist, or add a couple of low-maintenance houseplants to bring life to the room as the garden quietens down.

7. Make your entrance winter-ready

Wet coats, muddy boots and soggy dog paws - winter in Northern Ireland is rarely dry. A good, hard-wearing doormat inside and out, a boot tray, and a few extra hooks by the door will keep the mess contained and make coming home feel a lot calmer.

8. Stock the kitchen for slow evenings

Cosy season is as much about how a home smells and tastes as how it looks. Keep the cupboards stocked for soups, stews and Sunday roasts, have a good supply of hot chocolate and herbal teas on hand, and dust off the slow cooker. There's nothing quite like walking through the door to the smell of something that's been simmering all afternoon.

9. Give the garden a little attention

Before winter properly arrives, spend an afternoon tidying up outside. Sweep up leaves from paths and patios, store or cover garden furniture, and plant a few spring bulbs so you've something to look forward to come March. A string of outdoor lights or a lantern by the front door also makes arriving home on a dark evening that bit more welcoming.

10. Plan a few cosy-season rituals

The best part of this time of year is the time you spend at home. Plan a monthly film night, invite friends round for a hearty supper, or start a Sunday afternoon baking tradition. A home is at its cosiest when it's full of the people you love.
